There'll be plenty where that doesn't work, as many different sites are
served from the same IP, and the domain name needs to be used during the
request.

Another option for you is that you can run your own DNS server.  I
started doing that since getting an ISP with a crappy DNS server long
ago.  Iinet isn't associated with iHug, is it?  They were always having
crappy networking issues like you described (DNS and connections).
