don't you need an initrd?
cd /boot
mkinitrd initrd-2.6.19-1.2798.fc6.img 2.6.19-1.2798
My /boot/grub/grub.conf has lines like this...
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.19-1.2911.6.5.fc6 ro root=LABEL=/ quiet rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.19-1.2911.6.5.fc6.img
