Thanks Tim,
 I had forgotten the mlabel command. I will have to set up a drive
letter that points to the first USB flash drive just for labeling.
(Actually 4 entries for by USB card reader - each slot is a SCSI
device.) If I get some spare time, maybe I'll grab the code for
mlabel, and see if I can modify it to accept /dev entries directly.
