Wow, it gets REAL interesting from here. First Supra -anything- is
generally a Win Modem. I had several given to me for my old 8 line BBS.
I had to dig through the init stuff to limit the modem to 9600 so it
wouldn't attempt compression. It relied on the system to do that rather
than have it's own internals to handle the compression duties ... it
required a driver for Windows to load the compression duties to the
motherboard CPU. Not generally regarded as a good thing in the
UNIX/Linux world.

Yeah, it gets involved composing the modem init string, plus the ATA,
(attention command to wake the modem) ATH to hang it up, ATD to dial, a
bunch of stuff that should have been setup by default. I agree, use
WVDIAL. It'll give you something that almost works out of the box, as
every modem out there has it's init-string preferences.

Maybe a google on: init string supra linux ...will get you what you need
to have handy, written down on a scrap of paper. Also google linux
winmodem to get you the official list of winmodems, to see if yours is
one. My Supras were very problamatic. Something like a US Robotics
external will work very well. They need only be hooked up to a working
serial port and sent commands to operate nicely. If kppp will work from
Gnome, I'd use it.
