You're right. It does look different. It is clearly more attractive in Linux.

I don't know why people bother with those ms fonts. Dejavu is the best. 
Liberation are too compressed and not very legible. Stick with Dejavu serif 
and sans. I have a penchant for serif, but have come to recognize that it is 
likely best reserved for printouts that should look elegant, but for reading 
web pages and on the display, sans is likely best.
