I'm sure you've missed something. My current ~ dates back to when I was 
using RHL 7.2 or so, and comes via a period when I used Debian Woody and 
Sarge. Currently, I'm running Scientific Linux 5, a Tikanga clone.

There have been few problems attributable to that heritage.

It's true that there have been fresh installs from time to time, but 
always my ~ has been copied on without dramas.
