Hmm, that's an odd one.  Mine appears about the same as any other GUI
program.  I'd expect something like a broken or missing font to cause
that sort of effect, but also affect other programs as well.

If you can open the options for OpenOffice.org, the first section of
them has a "view" sub-section, that has to do with the GUI rendering.
The User Interface part of that sub-section has font and sizing
controls.
