Another question to ask: Is there a gnome-settings-daemon process
running in the background? All GTK apps want to talk to it to get
the font settings established by gnome font setting app (either
gnome-appearance-properties in recent versions of gnome or
gnome-font-properties in older versions).

I have no idea if KDE starts up the gnome-settings-daemon for the
benefit of KDE users running GTK apps, so if you are running KDE,
that may be the problem.
