Hardware trouble? Me? Or ...??

Sounds like hardware to me. But I suppose something could be wedged
and won't become un-wedged until a true power-off event. You may have
to physically remove the battery and leave it out for a while just to
make SURE there's no power applied, at all. If you have a voltmeter
you could hook it up to the output of the wall-wart (power supply) to
see if anything is coming out of it.
