I've just read a blog http://agateau.wordpress.com/2008/12/16/krunner-is-more-
powerful-than-it-looks/ that may be relevant to your speed issue.  Take a look 
at the menu from the spanner, and uncheck runners that you probably won't want 
to use.  It should speed things up.  HTH
