Dear All FEDORA Users,

I am a new bir in fedora linux system as administrator.

Please tell me one thing.

In my fedora linux os server, i am not able to sshd service .

The thing is that, once I had to change the permissions of the files just in order to avoid the other users to explore the system, using chmod command. However, I have immediately changed the permissons again back.

Soon after that I could not log on to the fedora server systm using the ssh  serverhostname username command.

When tried to run sshd service using service sshd restart, I got the folloeing errors shown below:-

Permissions 0755 for '/etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key' are too open.
It is recommended that your private key files are NOT accessible by others.
This private key will be ignored.
bad permissions :ignore key: /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key
Could not load host key : /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key
Disabling protocol version 2. Could not load host key
sshd: no  hostkeys available --exiting

Please immedialtely let me know, what to fix in order to restart the service sshd.

Your hostname is set in /etc/sysconfig/network. /etc/hosts is only for
name resolution, although you should prbably set your hostname there as
well. You should use lower case for the hostname, some apps don't grok
mixed or upper case.

I set the hostname with lower case in network. Everything works fine --
I guess I just had a brain cramp or something. However, I had heard
that some programs don't understand upper case hostnames. In F9 I
purposefully used CASE to see. I didn't hit one program that had a
problem. I wonder if that means the world has changed by now and a user
can get away with using upper case.

I have a strange (local) network problem in fc 10 which I never had in
fc9 on the same hardware (with same config files).

This machine serves as a proxy+firewall between about 10 other machines
on the local network (192. addresses - the # of machines varies
depending on where laptops are) and the real world. There have
been no problems up through fc9 (fc2-9 worked fine). No hardware has
changed, and this is a clean install (I can swap boot drives in the
bios so am able to go back to fc9 to check if and compare). While on
fc9 the following work correctly, on fc10 the results are a little
different:

Under fc9:
  + The firewall+proxy machine can see all of the network printers
    and ALL of the machines on the 192 network.
  + All Linux, windows, and Solaris machines on the 192 network
    can see the firewall+proxy machine.

Under fc10:
  + The firewall+proxy machine can see all of the network printers
    but CANNOT see the windows machines on the 192 network.
  + ONLY the non-windows machines on the 192 network can see the
    firewall+proxy machine. (The windows machines can still see
    each other AND can see everything except the firewall+proxy
    box.

The files
    /etc/hosts
    /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
    /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1
    /etc/rc.d/rc.local
are identical between the fc9 root and the fc10 install.

None of the other machines (Linux or windows) has had any updates since
BEFORE the install of fc10.

The firewall+proxy machine can see all of the Linux machines on the
network, but none of the windows machines.

A packet sniffer can see the attempts to ping from both sides, but
there is never an answer in either direction.

Finally, I can boot to the fc9 root drive and the problem disappears,
while if I boot to the fc10 drive, it occurs repeatably.

Machine: Athlon 64 X2 6000+ CPU with 6 GB ram, mixed scsi and eide
drives.
Kernel: (fc10: same result with both kernel-2.6.27.7-134.fc10.x86_64
and kernel-2.6.27.5-117.fc10.x86_64). {note: on fc9 it was the
2.6.27.7-53.fc9.x86_64 kernel}.
Glibc: glibc-2.9-3 (x86_64, i686, and i386 installed).

Any pointers as to what I might try to find a solution here would be
greatly appreciated, as I've spent many hours reading and going over
everything I could think of - with no luck.

I suspected a problem with SE linux, so as a test, I took the firewall
+proxy machine off the internet (no connection), disabled selinux, and
rebooted. The results were (as expected) unchanged. (And it's back in
place now, although I thought the disk relabeling would take
forever...).

I really don't think this is a bug - scanning through bugzilla didn't
find any pointers. I suspect cockpit error (mine), but I can't
identify it so far. Please help.

Thanks

As mentioned to Mikkel, /etc/grub.conf is a link to /boot/grub/grub.conf,
but there is no grub directory in /boot.

I cannot remember if there was one after installation, but I got the feeling
that a couple of things changed after I moved the HDD to the second machine
and selected 'Install/Upgrade'. I got the following message -

Warning: The partition table on device sda (ATA ST38410A 8213 MB) was
unreadable. To create new partitions it must be initialized, causing the
loss of ALL DATA on this drive. This operation will override any previous
installation choices about which drives to ignore.

I did not proceed past this point, but afterwards I noticed that the
contents of /etc/fstab had changed.

Before, it looked like this -

/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00  /  ext3  defaults  1  1
UUID=b6c62c5a-0afb-4258-a726-6a377a6f3b9e  /boot  ext3  defaults  1  2
tmpfs  /dev/shm  tmpfs  defaults  0  0
devpts  /dev/pts  devpts  gid=5,mode=620  0  0
sysfs  /sys  sysfs  defaults  0  0
proc  /proc  proc  defaults  0  0
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01  swap  swap  defaults  0  0

Afterwards, it changed to this -

UUID=6e47e294-fc8d-4457-b1e9-03f68a57d0aa  /  ext3  defaults  1  1
tmpfs  /dev/shm  tmpfs  defaults  0  0
devpts  /dev/pts  devpts  gid=5,mode=620  0  0
sysfs  /sys  sysfs  defaults  0  0
proc  /proc  proc  defaults  0  0
UUID=519e0658-aa0a-49a2-9b39-d80e92b0c838  swap  swap  defaults  0  0

I don't know if any of this is significant.

Thanks

Frank

I fail to see the importance of what desktop environment a kernel
hacker is using. Unless of course you're a kernel hacker yourself.
Even then, the DE is entirely userspace.

As I mentioned before, there is no grub directory in /boot, so there is no
grub menu on bootup. I don't know why. All I can do is press <esc>
once
booting has started, and it changes from a progress bar to the old text
display, but there does not seem to be any place where I can add or change
boot options.

I did do this, and it seemed to build ok. However, I don't know how to tell
it to use the newly created image.

I did a search for '*grub*' on my system. It found a few files. The
following could be relevant -

1. /etc/sysconfig/grub
    boot=/dev/sda
    forcelba=0

2. /sbin/grub-install
    I ran it, but it asked for an install_device. I prefer not to guess, so
I did not try any further.

For the record, 'ls /boot' looks like this -

config-2.6.27.7-134.fc10.i686
initrd-2.6.27.7-134.fc10.i686.img
System.map-2.6.27.7-134.fc10.i686
vmlinuz-2.6.27.7-134.fc10.i686

If I type 'umount /boot', it says '/boot: not mounted'. Is that
expected? As
mentioned in my reply to Paulo, /etc/fstab has changed. It used to contain
an entry for /boot, but now it does not. I am not sure when it changed, but
I think it was when I selected Install/Upgrade on the second machine. I got
a warning message and did not proceed, but a couple of things seem to have
changed after that.

It is quite possible that my messing around has left things in a state which
makes it difficult to diagnose problems. If you would like me to re-install
from scratch on the first machine and start the whole process again, I will
try that. I think it is worth persevering with this exercise to prove a
point. Hopefully others may find it of benefit as well.

Any more suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

Frank

I guess it is not important but possibly interesting to know his thoughts
since I read some time ago that Linus was a long time avid fan of KDE. I
wondered if he still is a KDE(4) fan, as he uses Fedora I was told, that was
all.

I can't find the awesfx package for Fedora 10, and nothing in the Fedora or
RPMFusion repositories provides the file "*/asfxload" or
"*/sfxload"

These executables are REQUIRED for loading samples into an EMU10k
soundcard's wavetable synth, and hence are required for hardware MIDI
support.

Where did this package go? If I remember, Fedora 8 had it for instance.
I've tried building it myself to no avail.

Does anyone know where I can find an x86_64 awesfx package for Fedora 10?

You'll need to run them as a command on a terminal, exactly as was entered

It's marked "dead.package". See:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/405131

I no longer have any SB AWE/EMU10k cards, so I don't know what is used
to load soundfonts to them nowadays.

Hi,

is there a way to have the fedora 10 KDE login window on the standard fedora
10 (with KDE) ?
i find the KDE login nicer than the standard GNOME login window.
thanks a lot.

Konsole can also do transparent background (it's set up in your Konsole
color scheme), but only if you have desktop effects enabled in the window
manager (because it's true transparency, not fake transparency).

Nope, I'm still using and comaintaining KDE, I don't see how KDE 4.1 is
any
worse than 3.5. Well, there's a couple of missing features, but most of
those are coming back in 4.2. I don't think switching to GNOME makes any
sense, really, but of course you're free to use whatever you prefer, as
always.

DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"
in /etc/sysconfig/desktop

and then init 3;init 5 or a reboot

I have this in mine
Pretty sure that its not all necessary !!

tarifa ~ 1001# cat /etc/sysconfig/desktop
DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"
WINDOWMANAGER="XFCE"
DISPLAY="KDE"
DESKTOP="XFCE"
