I believe the message is generated when HAL tries to run as a user 
other then the one that "owns" the console. For example, when I am 
logged into the GUI as mikkel, then the USB stick will be mounted on 
a mount point off of /media, and if it has the usual VFAT file 
system, then the owner will be mikkel.mikkel so that I can access 
the files. If it has a file system that does support UID/GID, then 
those will apply instead.

You should not need to edit anything, unless you have an entry in 
/etc/fstab for the USB stick. This would prevent HAL from 
auto-mounting it. You can check /var/log/messages to see if there 
are more details about why it failed.
