gnome-system-monitor

We are going over a VPN to another system far away.
They wanted to monitor the system from here so I did

 ssh -X -l root system

and then

 gnome-system-monitor

The window came up with the buttons and everything, but the
actual data (system monitor stuff) was very slow. Actually
we couldn't wait that long. I am sure it is all the X traffic.
Is there some simpler way to do this that would be quicker?
