What is the root of the "no sound" problem for some programs?

Well, I found that the "all of the above" approach, followed by a
reboot, seems to have fixed the problem.  I'm guessing that the
installation of  kde-settings-pulseaudio was the magic bullet.  I
turned on avahi, removed  But I did so many things before giving up in
frustration and going away.  Only later to return and restart and then
it "just worked".
