SOLVED: RE: Xdmxp login to remote machine via gdm

I feel a bit of a goose but I got it worked out- strangely enough it was while working on another problem I have with X.

For reference, I was able to obtain a chooser under the gdmsetup. Under Security->Configure X Server one can choose whether to use the greeter or the chooser to be displayed for login. Unfortunately I didn't see a way to add a new server type, and so even if you add new consoles if you select the chooser then it will be displayed on all like servers. This means that to not lock yourself out of your own system you need to add a new server type manually to the custom.conf, and while there you can set chooser to true under the server type, then add new server to the servers list using the "remote" server type rather than standard.

I apologise if you already know this, but I thought I might do this any newbies who come along. Also, if someone wants to make a how-to then email me direct for further clarity (I do one myself, but my time does not allow).

One thing that did fool me was the conf described the placement of the chooser=true under the greeter section. This needs to be under the specific server. It also didn't help that I was looking for something similar to kdm, where you have a login screen but you can select remote login from there. GDM doesn't have that- they're separate items: one or the other.

If you do use kdm, and the remote system uses gnome I found there was some trouble with that aspect too- or maybe it was just me. Unfortunately I can't check that now, but anyway watch for that too.
