fc8 how to stop gui pop-up notifications of available updates??

Nor me (Gnome only). *Almost* anytime I try to use the pre-assigned
hotkey to logout, or assign another key sequence, it doesn't do
anything.
It'll work on a new setup, but after a small amount of desktop
customisation (e.g. add a desktop background, choose a keyboard hotkey
to be the compose key, a couple of tweaks like that), that feature
refuses to work. Likewise for other hotkeys. It's been that way on
every release of Fedora that I've tried.
