Have you tried the generic SVGA driver? E.g. in /etc/X11/xorg.conf,
change this:
> Section "Device"
> Identifier "Videocard0"
> Driver "savage"
To this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "svga"
That should at least let you get X running, and then you can find a
specific driver for your card at your leisure.
