makewhatis

no matter what i do to man.conf or specify on the command line,  
"makewhatis" always creates a database so that "apropos" produces  
triplicate output, which is cluttered and time consuming.  Also, if i  
use NOCACHE in man.conf and eliminate /var/cache/catman, "makewhatis"  
just plain stops working.

Anyone know if there are alternate shell scripts anywhere to the one in  
fedora 7? Or if there is anything else i can do to avoid editing this  
script?
