Audacity recording issue

I've noted that while using Audacity to record from my USB phonograph
the speed of the audio that is recorded speeds up in frequency. This
seems to coincide with playback from another audio device, either Amarok
playing a stream or Pidgin message notifications.
Pidgin stops accessing the audio altogether once Audacity is running.
The whole thing is befuddling as the recording and playback are
occurring on two different Alsa devices(USB audio input and on board
sound card playback).
