sure seems as though OP's issue is that the top 3 lines of /etc/hosts
are different from...

$ head -n 3 /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1       localhost.localdomain   localhost

as if someone edited this information and it's causing a problem
