sudo doesn't work, I'm not in sudoers file, but I am.

Simply the habits you're used to... I've always used "su -" since I've
mainly used Red Hat originated Linuxs, and I've not been convinced that
"sudo" is a better way.
Habits tend to change, after a while, given sufficient motivation.
