automount -- failed to mount /misc/.directory

I have automount configured to mount a number of directories
under the /misc mount point.  I'm running FC 5, with autofs-4.1.4.

I get many log messages saying that automount was unable
to mount /misc/.directory.

Does anyone know what autofs is looking for.
