You could see if the mplayer binary links to libsmbclinet:
[mirandam at charon ~]$ ldd /usr/bin/mplayer | grep smb

For example you should see something like:
libsmbclient.so.0 => /usr/lib/libsmbclient.so.0 (0x00150000)
