Just for an exercise?  Unless you want to do that, you don't have to
compile it.  GFTP (a graphical *FTP* tool, as the name says, with some
other protocols, too), already exists as a precompiled package, and can
simply be yum installed.

pick your mirror:  /pub/fedora/releases/8/Everything/i386/os/Packages/gftp-2.0.18-7.fc8.i386.rpm
