But I don't know why you have a problem with the nvidia driver. Have
you applied all the updates to X? On a system where I had this nv
driver problem, the nvidia driver from the livna repo worked fine
for me on a fully updated system.

On the other hand, when I tried the "nouveau" driver, I did get
lockups:
