I have looked at a few smaller files in the past without a problem.
I had been using xpdf in the past but tried evince when I was having
trouble with some files that used later revs of the pdf standard. (It didn't
help with that. but I liked the way it worked better. I ended up using
ghostscript to convert the pdf's in question to level 2 postscript.)
