I have noted in the past that the fedora kernels statically link the
things like the usbhid module, perhaps your new kernel didn't do that.

Possibly you should check the kernel config of the custom kernel you
built against the fedora config (which should be in /boot along with
the kernel and initrd). You probably only want them to be different
in the one place where you added support for your dvd drive.
