Yes but even with sendmail running, sometimes the mail
does not go through. Occasionally I have better luck
when I change the hostname to a fully qualified.
That is instead of host or host at localdomain
I make it host at company.com but not always.

If you mean there's no mail command, that's one thing. If you mean mail 
isn't delivered, the "sendmail" server is outgoing, the "dovecot" 
service is incoming.

And if you mean something else, please restate the question.
