Is the nvidia proprietary driver much faster (for me) than nv driver?

Without the proprietary driver, your computer will have a poor
software based 3D.

With the proprietary driver, even the "fonts" will look better.
And you will be able to use your hardware acceleration to activate
compiz (cube desktop and real translucid windows).

But the virtual machine has a "virtual hardware" and it doesn't
include your GeForce.
There are some VMWare Workstation versions that can use 3D
acceleration, but it's not as fast as it could be, and nether I know
if Linux versions of Workstation has this feature.
