Is the nvidia proprietary driver much faster (for me) than nv driver?

Trouble is that I'm now caught by the kernel update forced by
installing the nvidia drivers from livna, it stops my VMWare working.
Yes, I know there are patches for VMWare but I'd rather not at the
moment.
