[F8] Gnome volume applet icon fails to appear

Wrong thing. That's to do with mounting disc volumes.
rpm -qi gnome-volume-manager
If you add the "volume control" applet, with the icon of a rotary volume
control, and the description of "adjust the sound volume," that should
do what you want.
