Fedora 9 live CD i386 install has grub error 2 under certain circumstances

I installed from the Fedora 9 live CD to a boot and root partition. The
install went smoothly. I didn't write to the MBR but instead the boot
partition. When I reboot to start the new OS, I use configfile to point
to the new boot partition and it selects it. But then it gives an error
2, invalid directory or file. There is a bugzilla open for this,
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=443289.

It turns out that Fedora 9 grub uses a default of 256 byte inodes, while
older versions use 128 byte inodes. The record points to some
discussion of this, and suggests some workarounds. Instead of spending
a lot of time trying to resolve the problem, I decided to use preupgrade.

If you have a solution I'd love to hear it, but I'm posting this mostly
as a heads up for anyone with this problem.
