Interestingly if I shutdown all copies of FF, it then works correctly
(click on a mail message URL, and the browser opens up at the page).
However, if a browser is already open, then it doesn't work correctly.

Firefox settings are to open new pages in a new window; all other
options are unchecked. The 'open a link in a new *tab*; switch to it
immediately' option looked promising, but made no difference. Note I
highlighted that it mentions 'tab' as opposed to a new window.
