Preupgrade: Upgrade F8 i386 to F9 x86_64?

I have a 64bit laptop in which I've installed FC6 i386 (due to 64bit
trobules at the time) which has been upgraded twice through F7 and F8.

Is it possible to "cross-upgrade" my distro from i386 to x86_64
without reinstalling from scratch using the preupgrade tool? I can
easily edit the
/usr/share/preupgrade/releases.list to grab packages for another
architecture, but will it work? :)
