If you could be more specific, WHAT you want to encrypt? Here some 
suggestions.

- Single files, E-Mails    -> GPG (you might refer to it as PGP)
- Directories              -> fuse + encfs
- Partitions, file systems -> cryptsetup (possibly with luks)
