Issue with yum updating

I have tried that but getting the following error:

ptopping at tonic
[/home/ptopping]$ sudo yum clean metadata
Loading "kernel-module" plugin
Loading "fastestmirror" plugin
Existing lock /var/run/yum.pid: another copy is running as pid 12657.
Another app is currently holding the yum lock; waiting for it to exit...
Another app is currently holding the yum lock; waiting for it to exit...

I have checked /var/run and there isn't a file yum.pid:

[root at turtle log]# ls -l yum*
-rw------- 1 root root 31917 2008-10-14 06:24 yum.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 30874 2008-01-22 13:29 yum.log-20080123
-rw------- 1 root root 31661 2008-04-24 08:09 yum.log-20080424

Any thoughts...????
