No sound with Banshee

I'm interested in trying Banshee as it is said to support Ipods, which
Amarok 2 currently doesn't. However on startup from the Shell I get:

        % banshee-1
        [Info 12:10:57.589] Running Banshee 1.4.0
[Warn 12:10:58.755] Caught an exception - No support GNOME Settings Daemon could be reached. (in `Banshee.MultimediaKeys')
          at Banshee.MultimediaKeys.MultimediaKeysService.Banshee.ServiceStack.IExtensionService.Initialize () [0x00000]
          at Banshee.ServiceStack.ServiceManager.StartExtension (Mono.Addins.TypeExtensionNode node) [0x00000]
[Warn 12:10:58.755] Extension `Banshee.MultimediaKeys.MultimediaKeysService' not started: No support GNOME Settings Daemon could be reached.

and when I try to play a track I get this several times on the terminal:

[Error 11:55:40.797] GStreamer resource error: NotFound

which is to the say the less unhelpful.

I know Banshee uses gstreamer for sound, but how do I configure it? The
included gstreamer tools seem to be for low-level debugging. Is it not
possible to run Banshee under KDE? I looked at gnome-control-center but
couldn't see anything relevant.

On the same system, Amarok works, Flash video sound works, vlc works.
I'm using PulseAudio under F10-pre with KDE.
