Something which can hold up package depsolvers (not just yum but many
others too) is mirror speed.  I like to install yum-fastestmirror and
tune it by adding to the "exclude" line in the
/etc/yum/pluginconf.d/fastestmirror.conf file.  I use it to exclude
mirrors that always seem to respond quickly but don't always have good
bandwidth.  You might find this helpful too.
