A quick answer is no.
As in my previous reply, the problem was specifically the permissions of
/var/run/gdm. This cause xauth to fail to acquire a lock. Both the -X
and -Y options of ssh invoke xauth, and thus run into the same problem,
which is unrelated to ssh.
