Getting NM updates back out

Final "solution" was to kill NM completely and hand configure the NIC, whereupon 
it works fine. The config has an essid and key specified, can't set the channel 
in NM in managed mode, doesn't find the AP if the channel isn't set.

NOTE: this has been working since early FC9, the new NM update in the last few 
days broke it. Since I have a way around it I'm functional.
