little icons go white/blank

after using F9 for a while, the little icons to the right of the 2X2

desktop matrix go blank (white)

These are 

(1) volume
(2) network double monitor
(3) little plug for kpowersave

These are restored if I do

ctrl-alt F1
ctrl-alt F7   learned this from a leprechaun
