xdelta patches + mtime info for converting update archives?

* rsync does not work thru proxies (proxy enforced here). 

* rsync increases load at the server since the files have to be read 
  at the server side in order to determine the small changes to be
  transmitted.

perhaps I can take archive home and rsync from there...
