The image from "2001" is classic. It's said to be the only joke in the
movie.

There's a fascinating book by Donald Norman called "The Design of
Everyday Things" which looks at how non-obvious many "obvious" things
are (e.g. hot and cold taps, light switches etc. in the US vs. Europe).
