Does Thundergird Crash when to many Emalis in Inbox ??

Sounds like there's something in one of those mails that's trying to 
execute (javascript? maybe) or Tbird is trying to render and it's 
bombing it.

Totally a guess.  But I will say for sure Thunderbird handles WAY more 
than 600 messages in an Inbox, I routinely have 5 or 6K in my Inbox and 
subfolders.
