microphone not recording

Try this:


for fedora 9

here, pulseaudio comes in...

you don't know if the there is a pulseaudio sound server, nor, if there 
were, how it can be (re)started.

before you hear your own voice after typing in

cat /dev/dsp > /dev/dsp

and speaking into your PC you just are not ready for skype...

perhaps these two processes should run (?) on your system for sound...

2486 ? S 0:00 /usr/libexec/pulse/gconf-helper

the first one is the pulse-audio-server, which does not come from 
/usr/sbin... (from where it could be started only by root). the idea 
behind this is: each user can start his own sound-server on the system, 
taking input from whatever this user chooses and bringing output to 
whatever output this user chooses. so, on one hw system, many sound 
server can be active at the same time.

you must not be root.

if your system uses pulseaudio throughout, you may not need the 
following alsamixer step, which is for the older also-sound system.

type in
alsamixer

if you get the error-message, that probably your sound server is not 
running, reboot, because you don't know how to (re)start the sound 
server with the system running. after the system comes up type alsamixer 
again.

you should see three views: playback, capture, and all. you change 
between views typing TAB.
you go into the capture view. below the pile you should see L and R and 
below that CAPTUR, and below that you should see the percentage of the 
pile, and below that you see the <CAPTURE> selector (red on blue ground).
give that pile an approp length/percentage.
click ESC to exit alsamixer.

now comes again pulseaudio, so do not miss this step:

then - mehr schwieriger jetzt - give the volume-control in the 
gnome-panel at the very right hand side a right-click, and then select 
Open Volume Control.
The Volume Control ESS Maestro03 PCI (Alsa mixer) windows opens.
You may also select this application going through 
System/Preferences/Hardware/Volume Control.

Here, you must see four tabs: Playback, Recording, Switches, Options.
If you see only playback, klick Edit/Preferences and select all 
sub-applications you consider important.

on the playback tab, master, PCM, and microphone must have an approp 
pile and must not be muted.
on the recording tab, you see the Capture pile, which also must be of 
approp length, and must not be muted.
on the Switches tab, you must select/check Microphone Capture.
on the Options tab, you must select Mic1 (we only have one Microphone).
Then File/Quit.

and then you must reboot your system, because you don't know, how to 
(re)start the sound server.

and then you should hear yourself when speaking into your PC with
cat /dev/dsp > /dev/dsp

and also the skype ca'' testing service should work.
