I suppose it would depend on the IMAP server. Do some keep their own
indexes? I can't see any evidence of Dovecot doing that when it's
storing mail in mailspool files.
I would have thought a mail client would have been keeping a running
count, adding to it as it goes along. Though, if you used two different
clients, at different times, that wouldn't work.

Don't send private replies to my address, the mailbox is ignored. I
read messages from the public lists.
