The examples in the man page are incorrect.  After some experimentation,
here is the command to run:

amixer -c 0 cset numid=33 value=false

Same request.  If it sets it, try sound.  If it doesn't, report error.

I don't think you do, but you might have to log in and out of X to pick
up the change.

If there is still no sound after the change, we'll start looking at
pulseaudio settings and configuration.
