how to check link under Linux

as we can do a check on e.g.: routerOS:

interface ethernet monitor ether1
                 status: link-ok
       auto-negotiation: done
                   rate: 100Mbps
            full-duplex: yes
  default-cable-setting: standard

how could I check that is there a link under "Linux"? [to get info about the cable - is it plugged in or not?]
