Well - I may have spoken too soon - to a degree. The issue seems to be
that, at some point in the past, an update DID install duplicate i386
packages.

Using Yum Extender, I went through and found these and removed them.
Doing this while simultaneously performing the updates to the 64-bit
packages allowed the update to complete successfully.

I still consider this an issue - the i386 duplicates should never have
been installed through dependencies to begin with. But it seems I have
the problem under control on my system for now...
