KDE Kickoff => SystemSettings => Display

don't know the Gnome equivalent

If display was connected and turned on when you started laptop, it
should be able to detect and offer all possible modes.

system-config-display *might* have created an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
which *might* hold you back.
